Pre-K is the age of noticing shapes. Kids at this age can usually point to a circle, and many can name a square or triangle. Rectangles and ovals often get mixed up for a while, and that is perfectly normal.
Tracing is the best place to start. On the Trace the shapes sheet your child sees a solid model and a dashed outline next to it, with a blue dot showing where to start. It builds the hand control they will need for letters later on. Do not worry about wobbly lines. Fat crayons or chunky pencils help small hands.
Once tracing feels comfortable, try Match the shapes. Your child draws a line from each shape to its name. They may not read the words yet, so say each name aloud and let them look at the first letter. The easy level sticks to circle, square, triangle and rectangle.
Keep sessions to five or ten minutes. When your child names the four basic shapes on their own, you can try oval, star, heart and diamond.
