At this age, counting is mostly about one-to-one correspondence. That means one touch for one object and one number word for each touch. Many Pre-K kids can recite 1, 2, 3 long before they can match those words to real things, so do not worry if the numbers come out in a rush.
Start with the easy level, which stays between 1 and 5. Pick a theme your kid already loves, like dinosaurs or ocean animals, because a favorite picture keeps small hands interested. Let your kid point at each picture while counting out loud. Pointing is not a crutch. It is how the skill is built.
The circle version is a gentle first step. Your kid counts the pictures and circles the right number from three choices, so there is no writing to wrestle with yet. Numerals can be tricky for little hands, and this sheet lets them show they understand the count without the pencil getting in the way.
Move on when your kid counts to 5 without losing their place and without needing you to point. Then try the write version, or stretch toward 10. Keep it to one sheet at a time. A few minutes is plenty.
