In Grade 2, story numbers grow, often up to 100. Kids still choose between adding and subtracting, but now they also deal with tens and ones. That makes each problem a two-step brain workout.
The usual trap is grabbing numbers and adding them without reading the question. Words like left or more can both mislead. Ask your kid what is being asked before touching a pencil. Is the answer going to be bigger or smaller than the starting number?
Begin with addition stories and subtraction stories at the medium level, where numbers stay within 20 or so. Once those are steady, push to 100. Mixed stories put both kinds on one sheet. They are the real test, because your kid has to decide each time.
Look at the number sentence your kid writes. If it matches the story, the answer is usually right. If it does not, retell the story slowly. Use the answer key afterwards, and have your kid explain one problem they found tricky.
