Grade 2 is when skip counting turns into real pattern thinking. Kids count by 2s, 5s and 10s from any starting number, not just from zero. Starting at 35 and counting by 5s is very different from starting at 5.
That is where the new difficulty lives. A row that begins at 14 and counts by 2s has no friendly landmark. Kids must hold the rule in mind and add it again and again. Crossing a hundred, like 96, 98, 100, 102, is another spot where tired minds slip.
Use counting by 2s, 5s and 10s first, and keep an eye on rows that start in odd places. When these feel easy, try Number patterns, which mixes in steps your child may not have seen, such as 3s and 4s. Some rows run backwards, which is a nice test of the rule.
Ask your child to tell you the rule before they fill in a row. If they can say 'it goes up by 5', they are not just guessing. This habit makes multiplication tables much easier next year.
