In Grade 2, a fraction is a piece of something whole. Your child learns that a shape can be split into equal parts and that each part has a name. Halves, thirds and quarters are the main ones.
Begin with Name the fraction. A shape is split into equal parts with some shaded, and your child writes the shaded part over the total. Then try Shade the fraction, where the fraction is given and your child colors the matching parts. Doing both shows that a fraction is read two ways, from the picture and back to it.
What gets hard is the word equal. A circle cut into three unequal slices is not thirds, and kids need to learn to look for that. Another bump is the bottom number. It counts all the parts, not just the shaded ones, so 1 shaded out of 4 is one quarter, not one third.
Stay with the easy level until halves and quarters come quickly. Medium adds thirds and a few more shaded parts. Move forward when your child can name a fraction without counting twice. Folding a paper strip into halves and then quarters gives a good hands-on break.
