Grade 4 rounding moves into the thousands. Your child already knows the idea, so the work now is about picking the right digit to look at. For the nearest 100, check the tens. For the nearest 1000, check the hundreds.
Rounding to the nearest 100 is a good place to begin if it has been a while. Then move on to Rounding to the nearest 1000, where a number like 6,478 rounds to 6,000 and 6,578 rounds to 7,000. The layout stays the same, a number, an arrow and a box, so your child can focus on the thinking.
What gets hard is a number that crosses a boundary. Rounding 3,950 to the nearest 100 gives 4,000, and kids often forget that the thousands digit changes. The hard level also uses numbers ending in 5 or 50, where the halfway rule applies. Practice saying it aloud: halfway rounds up.
Pair these sheets with real estimating. Round the price of a shopping basket or the distance of a road trip and see if the estimate feels sensible. Once your child gets most of a hard sheet right, rounding is ready to support the multi-digit work that comes next.
