Grade 3 stories ask for more than a quick add or subtract. Kids need to notice details, ignore extra information and check that the answer makes sense. The numbers reach 100, so regrouping comes into play.
If your kid struggles, it is often not the math. They may read too fast, miss a key word or stop at the first step. Ask them to underline the question and circle the numbers. That simple habit prevents many errors.
At this age, work mostly with mixed stories at the medium and hard levels. Use the addition-only or subtraction-only sheets as a warm up when your kid has had a long break. Look at the number sentence before the answer. A neat sentence shows a clear plan.
The best sign of progress is that your kid can say why they picked a method. Ask, how do you know it is a subtraction? If the reason is sound, they are ready for the multi-step problems that come in Grade 4. Check the answer key together and talk through any miss.
