In Grade 3, subtraction is about accuracy and flexibility. Kids already know the steps for borrowing. Now they need to do them reliably, and to see how subtraction connects to the addition facts they know.
Start with within 100 at the medium level to see what comes easily. If your kid makes mistakes, switch to hard, which has borrowing in a stacked layout, and work through a few problems slowly. Common errors include forgetting to reduce the tens digit after borrowing and subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in every column.
Missing number sheets are especially useful now. A problem like 81 minus a blank equals 46 can be solved by asking what number added to 46 gives 81. This link between subtraction and addition facts is one of the best habits to build, and it makes checking work easy.
Mental strategies help too. To take 29 from 74, try taking 30 and giving one back. Not every kid takes to this, so try it only after the written method feels steady.
Aim for a few focused minutes, a few times a week.
