Subtraction in Kindergarten is about taking away. Five apples, two get eaten, three are left. Kids this age do best when they can see or touch the objects, so the page is only half the story.
These sheets stay within 10, and answers never go below zero. At the easy level the biggest starting number is 5, which keeps the facts small and friendly. The medium level goes up to 10. The hard level adds some problems with a missing number, such as 7 minus a blank equals 4, so hold those until the first two levels are comfortable.
Subtraction is harder than addition for most young kids, so do not rush. Many need to be sure that adding is easy before taking away makes sense. If your kid is stuck, try buttons, coins or cereal pieces. Start with the whole group, push the ones being taken away to the side, and count what remains.
Zero is worth noticing too. Taking away nothing leaves everything, and taking away all leaves zero. Those two ideas surprise many five year olds, so point them out when they show up.
