A number bond is a little picture of a simple idea. One big circle holds the whole, and two smaller circles below hold the parts. If the whole is 5, the parts might be 2 and 3.
Kindergartners meet this idea before they are comfortable with adding. They are not memorizing yet. They are discovering that numbers can break apart and fit back together, which is the root of both addition and subtraction.
Start with bonds to 5 at the easy level. One part is hidden, and your child finds it. Bonds to 5 should feel solid before bonds to 10, which have many more pairs. Bring in physical things, such as five crayons split between two hands, so the diagram connects to something real.
When your child fills in the circles quickly and can tell you why the numbers fit, move up to bonds to 10. Expect some pairs, like 6 and 4, to need extra time. Mix short practice with play and keep each sheet to a few minutes.
