By Grade 1, number bonds stop being a new picture and start being a tool. Kids who know that 10 splits into 7 and 3 can answer both 7 + 3 and 10 - 3 without starting from scratch. That is why teachers keep coming back to them.
Start with bonds to 10 at the easy level, where one part is hidden. These ten pairs are worth knowing cold. Once they come easily, try the harder level, where the whole is sometimes the missing number. That is a small twist, because your kid now adds the two parts instead of finding a leftover.
Bonds to 20 are the next step. Many of them build on the ten pairs. If 7 and 3 make 10, then 17 and 3 make 20. Point out that pattern and the sheet becomes much less scary.
If your kid stalls, sketch the three circles and fill in what is known. Talk through it out loud, as in 'the whole is 14 and one part is 9, so what is left?' When a sheet is mostly right, you can move up a level or step on to subtraction.
