Real math does not announce what to do. These Grade 1 sheets mix addition and subtraction within 20 on one page, so your child has to read each sign. Add your child's name and print.

A sheet of only plus problems lets a child switch off. A mixed sheet fixes that. Your first grader has to look at every sign before answering, and that small pause is where real understanding grows.
Use the Addition and subtraction variant. All numbers stay within 20, and subtraction never goes below zero. The easy level keeps numbers small. Medium crosses ten now and then. Hard asks for facts like 15 - 8 next to 9 + 7, which tests whether your child really knows how the two are linked.
The usual mistake is working on autopilot. A child adds because the last five problems were adds. Ask your child to circle the sign before solving. It takes a second and cuts careless errors.
Do not rush here. If your child is still counting on fingers for most facts, go back to the plain addition and subtraction sheets for a week. Come back to mixed practice when facts to 10 feel automatic. A few mixed problems each night work better than a long session once a week.
