Grade 2 turns odd and even from a counting game into a rule. Kids learn to check the ones digit and ignore the rest. A number like 746 is even because of the 6, and a number like 531 is odd because of the 1.
That rule is simple, but it is not always obvious to a seven year old. Some kids see 'big' numbers and assume they must be hard. Others look at the first digit by mistake. Gently bring them back to the end of the number.
Begin with Even numbers within 100 to build speed, then try Odd numbers within 100. When both feel comfortable, move up to numbers within 1000. At that level, kids have to scan three-digit numbers quickly and stay focused through a longer row.
Ask your child why a number is odd or even, not just which one. A good answer sounds like 'it ends in 3'. You can also connect it to doubles, since an even number is a double of something. That link will matter in Grade 3 with multiplication.
