Word problems are a big jump for six year olds. They have to read a story, decide what is happening and choose to add or take away. The math itself is small. The reading is the work.
Start with addition stories within 10. They have a clear shape, where something is added and the total grows. Then try subtraction stories, where something goes away. Keep the numbers within 10 for a while and move to 20 when answers are coming easily.
Ask your kid to read each story out loud, then tell you in their own words what happened. Many errors come from skipping that step. Drawing quick dots or boxes for the objects can turn the story into something they can see.
Writing the number sentence is as important as the answer. It shows whether your kid understood the story. A correct answer with a wrong sentence is worth a chat. Mixed stories wait until Grade 2, so stick to one type per sheet for now. Check each sheet with the answer key.
