In Grade 1, comparing numbers is really a lesson in place value. The trick is to look at the tens first. Only when the tens match do the ones decide who wins.
Kids who are new to this often glance at the last digit by mistake. A pair like 39 and 41 catches them, because 9 is bigger than 1 but 41 is the bigger number. If you see that slip, it means place value needs a little more time, not that your kid is behind.
Begin with Comparing numbers to 100 at the easy level, where the numbers are far apart, like 23 and 71. When your kid answers quickly and correctly, try the hard level. Pairs such as 47 and 49 share a tens digit, so the ones have to do the work. A few equal pairs sneak in, which gives the = sign some practice.
If your kid freezes, draw each number as tens sticks and ones dots. Counting the sticks first makes the rule visible. Once a full sheet goes smoothly without drawing, it is a good time to look at Grade 2.
